Citation data

The SciELO Analytics Module provides for each journal a set of tables in CSV format with the number of citations received from SciELO network journals and the number of citations granted to other unrestricted journals. Only citations from journals to each journal are considered.

These tables, available from July 2022, are the result of an updated computer process that transforms into ISSN codes the titles (in conjunction with other data) spelled in the references cited in the articles of the SciELO Network. This process is an evolution of that previously existing and allowed to update citation counts to all journals.

Documentation on the computer process is also provided.

In total, five tables (files in tabular format) are available for each journal and year:

1. Granted citations: number of citations granted by the journal
2. Received citations: number of citations received by the journal
3. Cited forms: title of the journal cited and number of times it was identified
4. List of citing document codes: codes identifying the documents that cited the journal
5. List of standard records: standardized records that cited the journal

To obtain the detailed data of the selected journal for a specific year, indicate that year in the following menu and access the addresses provided in lists 1-5.

Description of the methods used to generate the data of the available tables

The tables available on this page use as a data source the references mentioned in the articles published in SciELO network journals. In practice this means that all references are processed and treated to allow the correct association between a title cited and its respective ISSN-L code. This treatment implies in eliminating accents and transforming the titles cited in all uppercase. Special characters such as quotes and parentheses, among others, are also eliminated. The following sessions describe the details related to each of the five tables.

1. Granted citations

The granted citations file has the following columns: "ISSN", "Title" and "Citations granted". Each line in this file records a cited journal and the last column represents the number of citations granted to it (i.e., how many times the journal selected in the upper menu cited the journal in the file line). In situations where the column representing the ISSN code is empty, it means that it was not possible to identify this code for the title cited. The following is a fictitious example for the citation file granted by the journal "Biota Neotropica"\ (ISSN 1676-0603).

2. Received citations

The received citation file has the following columns: "ISSN", "Title" and "Citations Received". Each line in this file records a citing journal and the last column represents the number of citations that the journal granted (i.e., how many times the selected journal in the upper menu has been cited by the journal in the file line). The following is a fictitious example for the citation file received by the journal "Biota Neotropica"\ (ISSN 1676-0603).

3. Cited forms

To verify how the journals have been cited in the citation records, the citation forms file can be consulted. In it the way each journal is cited is presented by frequency order. Thus, for each journal, the first lines indicate the most common forms that the authors have spelled the journal titles (for the year analyzed). In the file made available the following columns are present: "Standardized title", "Cited title" and "Frequency". The first column represents the standardized title by the SciELO method correction algorithms. The last column represents the number of times this title was cited in this spelling. The following is a fictitious example for the journal Revista de Adminsitração de Empresas (ISSN 0034-7590).

4. Citing documents

It is also possible to verify that Documents from the SciELO network quoted the journals. To do this, you can access the PIDS list file that contains all identifying codes that cited the analyzed journal. In this file there are two columns, namely: \ "PID and acronym of collection " and \ "year of the quoting document ". The first column is formed by a document identifier and an acronym of collection that together represent a unique document in the SciELO network. A fictional example is presented to the following to the Brazilian Journal of Urban Management (ISSN 2175-3369).

5. Standardized records

The most detailed file that is made available on this page is the one that shows the standardized citation records. In this file the following columns are presented: "Code of the citing collection", "ISSN", "Cited document code", "Cited reference code", \ "Citation reference year", "Cited title", "Cited volume" and "Correction method code". Through it it is possible to identify which document ("Collection codes and citing document) cited the analyzed journal ("ISSN" or "\Cited title"). The following table presents a fictitious example for citation records of the journal Revista de Administração de Empresas (ISSN 0034-7590).

It is also possible to observe what was the method used to associate the title of the journal cited to the ISSN-L (see the numerical value in the last column of the previously presented table). In the simplest situation, the title of the cited journal is associated with its respective ISSN-L code exactly, i.e., all characters spelled in the citation record correspond to one of the official titles without homonyms. In the most complex situation, the title is associated with methods and correction bases that consider the year and volume indicated in the citation record. The following table presents a description of the meaning of each correction code.
